|| MODS, PLOTS, GHOSTS AND YOU
Maison has grown since it began. We can no longer claim on ATP to be a game with less than 100 characters. Consequently, we have a lot of people who are new and shiny -- therefore here is the Newbie guide to Maison.
How does time work? Time in portes is 2:1 (2 OOC weeks equates to one week ICly) however periods of daylight and darkness do not equate to normal 12 hour cycles. Daylight periods ('Day time' according to updates) last for a week ICly as do periods of darkness ('Nights'). Occasionally this will change due to events, exam season or holidays but you'll be informed when this happens!
How do I get involved? However you like! Every week (or two weeks, if we don't make any scenery changes at the mid point of a day/night cycle) we will set the scene for you via an update posted to allthekeys. There will be danger, NPCs, weather, sometimes natural hazards, sometimes just eerie silence. If there is no open post for an NPC you want you are welcome to message a mod asking for one, or asking for them to tag you with that NPC in a post you have open, or to leave a note under the 'NPC Requests' heading on the latest update. If you want to try something (grabbing a key, breaking down an door, etc) you are welcome to reply to the update post or message a mod asking for the results, if it is possible, etc. Want to run a player plot? Just ask! We're happy for you to do these things, and if we can help in any way then we will!
What if I want to write a message/take a book/take a key/break a door? It's best to leave a note about things like this on the appropriate floor of the appropriate house on the settings page. That way, not only can the mods see it (and write you back a note or signify consequences) but other players can see if something will be missing/broken/locked!
Which mod should I talk to? Good question! Not all of your mods are good at all things.
Allison, for example, is our map mod! If you have questions about house layout, are confused by the maps in some way or rather lost, she is your lady! Nobody knows the interconnection of houses better than her.
Caitlin, Jack and TC do the bulk of the NPCing -- we have a good deal of overlap, but some of us do play certain NPCs more than others (Don, Drowned woman and Wax family are exclusively Caitlin; TC does most Lock, Orion, Lyhn and Simon things; Jack does most creepy dolls, Tormented Girl, Foul Boy and the Doll Queen). If you pick the wrong one, we can still usually talk you through most of it and just grab the right mod. Kit and Din also help us out with NPCing when we need extra hands!
Most of us can answer App questions! Caitlin specialises in information pages, hugs, worrying, ghost encounters and game mechanics. Jack specialises in OCs, ghosts, creepy inanimate things, committing HTML sins at 1AM, writing guides and questions that make the other mods awkward. TC specialises in questions revolving around 'will this break the house' and 'what happens if I sacrifice a goat in the library on the stroke of midnight' type complexities. She alarms people in chat by smiling and laughing in a suspiciously evil manner.
We all promise to only bite after asking nicely.
What are experiments? Experiment sign ups are, essentially, you putting your name in the hat for something horrid to happen to your character. What that thing is, we should stress, is entirely up to you. We will not force any damage you do not want, should you be drawn. Experiments can be physical, mental, both. Examples include characters getting Hellhound DNA, being made empathic, robotic characters being adjusted, characters being drugged and hypnotised to perceive themselves differently.
The duration of the effect is also selected by the player. It can last a week ooc, a week IC, only revert when they die or be forever. Get thinking!
How much do I have to play out of the actual experiment? You will be assigned a mod if you get picked, that mod will cater to your preferences.
I have a phobia/a squick/a problem with another player/a personal issue That is absolutely fine. Just let us know and we will adjust for you. If you have a topic you need to be careful of, we will try to flag anything in updates that might upset you. This may be a horror game, but we are not out to hurt you as a person -- and horror takes many forms. Likewise, if you have an OOC issue we will do our best to subtly make sure you aren't placed with the other mun during any events. If you need time out due to RL, you can hiatus and we will adjust for you -- you can have your character vanish for a while and come back if you would like.
You, as players, are the most important part of the game. Without you, nothing happens, so we want you to take care of yourselves!
So what if I do need that hiatus? As long as you let us know, it doesn't matter if you have only been on hiatus for a day or if you have to put it up after the activity check has been put up, we will not ask you to reply. If you are busy, if you are having problems, then your life should come first. We will give you a lot of leeway. This is why we try to remind you to tag your posts when you make them or reply to people -- if you forget to reply to the activity check then we search your tag to see if it was just a mistake and you are, in fact, around. (We would really rather you did, though, as it is less work for us if you do!)
In terms of hiatus mechanics, though, we can give you several options. You can simply autopilot, assuming your character is around but lost or doing something, you can have your character step through a door/into a cupboard and black out mysteriously for however long you are gone or you can have them whisked away by the Phantasms. If you would like the latter you can chat about it to us and we can perhaps think of something fun.
I'm stuck, help! Sometimes, this happens. A character can be pushed too far by events, expected or unexpected, or simply stagnate. If you find this happening, you can always let us know and we can offer suggestions to give them a kick -- or, if you have ideas, let us know too! Things happening are not strictly limited to experiments and updates, we can dream up something for you.
I really want to meet a ghost who isn't out! Sure, let us know! We can try and drag them out for the next night update. We take requests, that is what the NPC request thread is for on each update -- not just NPCs that are out at that time
Can I app this character? We accept OCs, Canon characters, Malleable Protagonists, AUs -- but not fandom OCs. If you are still unsure if your character is appable, for canon-specifics reasons, drop us a line on the contact page.
Can they bring their pet/familiar/etc? We take this case-by-case, but in general we have allowed this!
Your HTML is broken! Whoops! Let us know and we'll get right on that. Not all mods are HTML-fluent, but if you see Jack or Caitlin online they can probably comb through to see which tag we forgot to close or what image needs re-hosting!
Your French is wrong!! The de/des differentiation is the subtle difference between house made of doors and full of doors (without going into the more complex aspects of de vs de + article). We intended the name to signify the former.
I have another question! Ask away! We are waiting.
