Somewhere in between! Dean's consciousness would be asleep in his body, in this case, and the echo would pretend to be Dean but Dean who gives everyone awful advice and leads them into danger! Dean would be unaware of any of it.

This would be obviously something you could play yourself to whatever degree you like! It reverts when the echo leaves, at daybreak, or... well, if Dean manages to get himself killed obviously.
