Day One

The house wears its age like a funeral shroud. Dust and old wood cling to each other, left alone together until it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Sheets cover couches, making the familiar shapes alien in the half-light of morning.

The house is empty and quiet as you arrive.

Nothing walks the halls. No sounds interrupt the silence save for the occasional moan of the wind as it brushes the windows. Not even the rats disturb the stillness of the morning.

This place was beautiful once, and the remnants of that beauty remain in the crimson blush of dawn as it streams through dust streaked windows, in the ancient furniture, and in the piano caught half in shadow. The dim light disguises old stains and leaves the house looking innocent, if abandoned.

The house itself seems to welcome you as you arrive, as though something ancient and unknown has brushed past you, unseen and unrecognized.

Moving too quickly raises a cloud of dust and makes it difficult to see anything. How anyone got here is impossible to guess, and your new housemates will soon reveal that they are just as lost as you. The kitchen provides you with everything you could want to eat, but turning on the taps lets a steady stream of rusty water. It remains brackish and undrinkable until the pipes are allowed to clear themselves of the old water. Though the fridge works, the lights seem to be broken.

Dawn brightens the house and the morning seems to last impossibly long. The dirty windows dim the light and give the place an unnatural aura. If you’re unlucky enough to be sensitive to the supernatural, the house feels cold and you’re sure that you’re being watched. This continues no matter where you go in the house or how well you cover yourself against the unnatural chill. The day will be long and provide ample light for exploration. Locked doors block the path at every turn and limit discovery, but the house itself is certainly livable.

Welcome to the House; please enjoy your stay.
