The Zoo
Amphiptere:
The Zoo holds a small flock of feather-winged serpents in bright, jeweled colors; the creatures are each barely three feet in length, quick to hide in foliage or upper ledges when startled.
Basilisk:
This large snake in the Zoo has a cobralike hood and rough, shaggy-looking scales; it easily can match the height of anyone approaching, and has eyes that seem to shift in color.
"Bogey":
This enclosure at the Zoo is filled with an impenetrable darkness that also fills a cage in the holding pen at night. It's difficult to discern what might live there, although those watching it for too long will find themselves certain they are being studied in return....
A sign on its cage reads, "This creature uses illusions: Do not open this door whatever it may show you".
Centaurs:
These two unhappy creatures are inhabitants of the Zoo, one male and one female; the female is kept hobbled and the male has his arms bound behind him. The male often hovers protectively, getting between the female and the other side of the glass. They wear little more than ragged remains of some sort of hide clothing. They can occasionally be overheard when in the Holding Room conversing quietly in some unfamiliar language.
Goose:
An unusually large, fire-breathing goose with iridescent silver-white feathers tarnished by darker black marks. She is vicious and ill-tempered and will fiercely protect her brood of goslings—all of which look strangely dragonlike.
The goose and her young have been moved from the Zoo and currently reside in the Stables.
Gryphon:
This large creature also currently resides in the Stables, where she is pampered and content. She is often found accompanied by two small cubs, when those are not out elsewhere with the Guards.
Manticore:
This large winged creature kept in the Zoo is quick to bristle at most that approach, raising the cluster of long barbed spines on its tail menacingly; it currently has a small carved box that it seems to prize highly, never letting it far from a protective paw.
Orbs
These small balls of light are kept in what amounts to a large glass lantern in the Zoo; they drift about, occasionally dancing in patterns, and will track movement by the glass, but it's hard to discern what they might be.
Pixies:
Small flying humanoids, these otherworldly creatures have feathery hair and soft fur, large facetted eyes, feathery moth-like antennae, a thin and spindly build carried by butterfly-like wings, clawed hands and feet, and a sharp-fanged mouth with a thin tongue. They're inquisitive and fast-moving, although their sense of humor seems to tend toward the malicious.
"Rabbit?":
Another of the prizes in the Zoo, this creature seems to be some kind of large silver-furred rabbit; a pair of horns curve back between its ears, and something glitters among the fur on its forehead. Curiously, the creature also sports a pair of feathered wings, and seems to have a pair of sharp canines behind its incisors.
Sea Serpent:
A creature that seems to mix the fins and gills of a fish with the scales and general body of a large serpent. Its enclosures are tanks or built to keep flooded. Its scales are dulled and it often seems listless in the water, although it is quick to bristle at approach.
Selkie:
This large, mottled black and grey seal resides in the Zoo. As quick as it is to react to any approach, it is otherwise lethargic, often spending hours drifting in the shallow pools it's given.
Spider:
This massive creature looks large enough to be a potential threat to a human. It is prone to webbing over its enclosures, and will often spend hours at a time holding still in a corner.
Tortoise:
This massive, dark-colored beast has an elongated neck that it can extend out of its shell nearly the length of its body; its heavy shell seems craggy and has some weak, brown bits of moss clinging to it. It resides in the Zoo, where it will often forlornly watch those coming and going.
Unicorns:
A small band of three adults and one filly. They seem to evoke the older, feral unicorns of heraldic artwork and folklore, with leonine tails and an unevenly dangerous temperament. They have been moved from the Zoo to the Stables, where they currently live.
White Tiger:
This giant white cat resides in its cage, often surrounded by eddies of wind. While there is definitely an unhappy tension to it, it often seems placid, watching those passing by with a gaze that suggests more intelligence than a simple beast.
