|| DAY 019: GENERAL
The Huntsman rides to the gate, sounding his horn three times as the sun rises; his steed stamps its feet and gives a loud bellow of its own. Both sounds echo through the Castle and its environs.
A black winged shape with long, broad wings can be seen circling occasionally, past the walls. It does not approach, but the longer one watches it, the more there is a growing sensation of it watching back, judging and marking them as a target.
Outside the gate, the fog has retreated silently, leaving behind ruins once befitting a grand town. Here, the buildings have collapsed, and only outlines and stone remain in some places, while others host dessicated wooden structures, ready to collapse at a touch. The inhabitants too have fallen; in most places, only bones remain, but here and there a dessicated corpse may be found. None of them show any signs of a violent end or struggle, they simply appear to have fallen where they were standing. In dark corners, shadow, and deep places, the evidence of the apparent cause of this remains - strips of fog remain yet, drifting hazily on the sun-warmed air.
However, it seems that some have survived this encounter, if the frozen could be called living. Where the fog clings, the people remain, stuck in time, in mid-action. Under a tree in a park, its dirt still damp with fog, a class of children is frozen in a mixture of rapt attention and distraction as a young teacher gestures to the tree itself, a grand example of its species. Under an eave, a beggar sits, legs gone, hands held plaintively upwards, in the direction of two piles of bones. These and many more are reminders of this once-grand metropolis, frozen so long, but the fog continues its recession, edging away from the frozen remainders.
The broad plane the fog has revealed is dotted in places with the remains of buildings. Toppled towers, collapsed houses, and a few lingering ruins that have managed to hold together. Those who enter the ruins will feel as though they have stepped into a toom. Beyond the ruin is a wide, fast moving river. The remains of a bridge end abruptly midway across, and the river threatens its banks with little reguard for where buildings once stood. The fog has not retreated entirely, and many areas remained wrapped within it.
A broad, well made road snakes away from the castle, vanishing into the fog some miles away.
|| THE TOWN
Someone has built up a fire in the middle of the town square. A heavy pot of stew hangs above it.
For those who have been having the hunger pains during the night, this stew smells perfect. It is everything that they have been desiring. Eating it will quickly sate the indescribable hunger that has been gnawing at their sanity. Those who are not impacted by the hunger will find that it smells a bit sour, but that it tastes fine if they do try it.
There is something howling from inside the Well. It seems to be raising quite a ruckus, and anyone looking into it can clearly hear something splashing around in a panic. There is little to indicate what the creature captured within might be.
|| GARDENS AND YARD
The more dangerous growths in the Garden settle, rooting themselves into place. Those familiar with it will find that in the Garden’s restlessness, all of the paths through the thick undergrowth have changed. The garden has become an overgrown maze, full of dead-ends and odd loops.
The Dragon Goslings that inhabit the Stables are growing to be fine, feathered beasts. Although still awkward in proportions and clearly not fully mature, they have already reached their mother’s size. The young dragons have taken over the Gryphon House to practice flight. They flutter between beams and perches, often clumsily, but becoming more confident in their flight as the day goes on.
|| CASTLE
The door to the Steward's Quarters is one again unlocked. Although the ghost is still in a fouler mood than usual and notably intolerant of servants slacking off on their assigned chores, he is no longer outright dangerous to those who cross paths with him.
