|| NIGHT 038: GENERAL
Content warning for: needles
The House grows rapidly cooler as the day draw to a close, the sun setting and drawing away the last of its warmth as it disappears beyond the horizon. At first the darkness is long, no moon in sight behind the dark clouds, and with the black night comes a gradually increasing chill. By the time the night has set in completely, the temperature has dropped drastically; the guests' breath frosts in front of their faces, their flesh goosebumping from the cold. And, finally, the moon creeps out from behind the clouds, full and bright, casting a faded orange glow over everything in sight.
Staring outside too long and watching the moon will cause anyone to feel nauseous, a sinking pit in their stomachs.
The Glass Dogs thrive tonight, confident in the cooler temperatures, the child Tyler trotting along with them as well. They are mostly content to leave the houseguests alone, hunting rats in the halls, but they will not bow down if they feel cornered. Anyone who runs into them in a hallway will find teeth bared at them, the dogs immediately defensive of their space. If the guest does not withdraw it will not take long for the dogs to attack, sharp hackles raised and teeth gnashing.
The Wallcrawlers, too, are in all hallways. They are slower tonight, lagging behind and reluctant to attack. Anyone who lingers long, however, will find that the creatures are not so full as to not kill for later.
The bloody footprints in the Ballroom have vanished, the dance floor gleaming in the dim light afforded to it this night. There is little to draw attention to this room, large and echoingly empty, lost mostly to shadows. A music box has been left in the middle of the room, the tinkling notes of Swan Lake echoing in the room, barely penetrating to the furthest corners of the room. The box is small, cheaply made, covered in a mirrored surface that is now smudged with blood. The bloody footprints seem to be reflected on it in fine detail. They seem to move in time with the tinkling tune, a symphony that tugs at the deepest reaches of their minds, causing an uneasy feeling within them. The ballerina, spinning slowly on the top of the music box, looks agonized, blood soaking what should be plastic feet. Two red roses lay next to the music box, the word 'soon' painted in what appears to be blood. Something lurks in the darkness, a chuckling presence that is never seen, only heard. It is nonetheless lethal to anyone who attempts to take the roses or the music box.
The Art Enthusiast has returned to his Gallery. He is particularly distressed tonight, crying out in anger in pain, loud enough that anyone can hear him coming down the hall. His agony is almost palpable when the room is entered, and he can be seen sitting on the floor, face cradled in his broken hands. He seems harmless at first-- except that the moment anyone is within reach he grabs violently for them, his sobs turning into strained shouts. He is incredibly difficult to escape from, hands scrambling to snap his victim's neck.
The Basement in the First House is still a gruesome mess, gore somehow worse than in the day. Whatever efforts had been made to clean and protect the area in the light seem to have fallen into disrepair-- the ropes quarantining some areas have begun to rot and fray, the blood and corpses have attracted more rot. Bugs scatter across the floor at the sound of footsteps, fleeing from any guest who enters. The nurse in the black veil has risen to her feet and patrols the area, speaking low under her breath. Crouching by each body, her soothing murmurs fall on dead ears as she removes a vial from a pocket. She fills her syringe with some vaguely smoky liquid, injecting it into each body.
Anyone who interrupts her work will find blank, pupil-less eyes staring through the veil at them. She rises slowly to her feet and approaches, still talking softly.
"Shush now, it's alright. It's going to be over soon."
She isn't difficult to avoid, though she is persistent and quick. Exiting the main room to the surrounding area causes her energy to flag and she slowly loses interest, though until then she is quietly urgent in the way she speaks to those who listen. Anyone who lets her come close enough will find that her voice truly is soothing, calming the way a mother is to a child. The syringe is not menacing, and whatever she injects into the guest is warm, nonthreatening. It fills them with peace before they fall to sleep.
They will feel strangely well rested when they wake some time later in the Attic.
The Chapel is hushed, the lights dimmed; the pews stand empty. It seems as though any noise made in the room is affected by the pall, a normal speaking voice becoming a whisper, while attempts at shouting or anything louder fade out. A candle stands at each corner of the altar, the only lights that seem unaffected by the hush. It feels to any within the room as if the chapel itself is waiting, gone quiet in expectation; those who linger long will find the sense of quiet anticipation, the urge to still and wait infectious, enough that it may take a few minutes to shake back to normal tones of voice and normal reactions. Anything hostile that is already pursuing will follow into the room, but outside of that, most creatures will hesitate, not entering unprovoked.
All the apples that were hanging from the trees in the Orchard have been picked, leaving the trees with nothing but their yellowing leaves. Some of the apples that had fallen to the ground are left there though, where some of the Crows are picking at them.
The Electric Ghost is in the Cafeteria, sitting at one of the benches. The wood is charred in places, the electricity sparking off of the corpse setting parts of the table burning. Broken hands grip at the seat and deadened, empty eye sockets seem to stare straight ahead.
The thing lumbers after anyone who comes near, great arcs of electricity echoing off of each of its movements as it reaches out to seize anyone who stays in the cafeteria for long.
There's a woman at work in the Patisserie. It seems she's cleared away most of the sweets that are normally found in the room to free up space to use in her candy making. Tonight the table is instead covered with bowls and oven tins, as well as raw ingredients like sugar, fruit, berries and spices. She's moving back and forth between the table and the nearby stove where at least one pot is always steaming, looking focused and dedicated to her work, but she's open for discussion if approached.
The Servant's Kitchen seems particularly busy tonight. Though there's usually some kind of half finished feast to be found there, tonight a lot of the food seems to atually be done and as the night progresses there's even more to be found. Anything seasonal makes an appearances - there's mashed potatoes, roasted mushrooms, smoked pork and roasted turkey, as well as brussel sprouts, squash, zucchini and a variety of root vegetables alongside baked pears, stuffed apples and cranberries.
On occasion the guests might spot the Cook pacing the room, leaving or entering it, or working on the food laid out. He's not receptive if approached and disappears and reappears at random times, but on the other hand, he doesn't seem to notice if anyone sneaks a sample of the food he's prepared.
The Drowned Woman sits at the edge of the Lake, staring mournfully out over the water. She watches something ripple just below the surface, and seems almost too distracted to notice the houseguests. Anyone who approaches, however, will see that her whole body trembles as she shudders with cold, frost gathering on her skin from the wet in the night air. She will desperately grab anyone who comes within arm's length of her, dragging them down into the water with her and toward whatever lurks below the surface.
A young woman sits rocking in the Nursery, hugging her knees to her chest and sobbing. She seems devastated by something unseen, her entire body shaking as she cries and trembles. It would be a mistake to come too near, however, as the Needle Woman is dangerous even in her distress.
The floorboards have been pried open in the Bachelor's Kitchen, revealing the structure beneath. Most of the floor is open, the floorboards jagged and sharp where they've been broken off, littering the edges of the room and mixing with the dirt in a hole that's somehow deep enough to get through the foundation of the building. The earth the house sits on is clearly visible and the room smells damp and musky from it. The furniture in the room have been pushed aside or fallen in.
The scissors that were missing the past day and even more of them can be found in this hole, creating a sharp, dangerous bed for the baby lying wailing in its center. It's a dirty baby, like it's been hidden beneath the dirt for a long time, and looks to be newborn. There are small cuts on its skin, presumably from the scissors, but there are no other visible injuries, at least not from a distance.
If approached, the crying will mix with a voice; while the baby doesn't look like it's the one speaking it's still clear to anyone who listens that the voice belongs to the child despite there being no immediate source for the request that will appear in their minds.
"I'm hurt, I need a name ... please, can I have your name?"
Anyone who takes pity on the baby and reveals their name will not remember it for the rest of the night. If told, the name will feel wrong to them, not fit quite right. But the baby will stop crying and slowly vanish from sight, and no longer appear to the guest who gave up their name for it.
Anyone who denies the request once having heard it will die instantly.
The Student Bedroom, Bell Tower and Horrific Hotel Room are safe tonight.
